At the February Community Watch Meeting, we had several guest speakers from the City of Largo Programs.
The Largo Fire Rescue, spoke about smoke detectors and the importance of having an inspection and check-up of your existing smoke alarms.
We learned that if your alarm is older than 10 years old, it is probably not going to function properly. The life of most alarms is 10 years. However, if you are smokers, the life is then shortened to 8 years.
We learned also that if, the alarm is an electric one, it should be checked for a battery back-up device in it.
The Largo Fire Department will be conducting free home inspections of your alarm systems on March 2, 1999, in Whispering Pines. If you did not sign-up at the meeting, and wish to have your system checked, please see Bob or Denise at #609.
It is also important to have a fire exit plan and map for your family and guests. This is also part of the check-up.
One no cost smoke alarm is offered to a family to replace or to put in place in a home during this inspection.
The Largo Police Department also spoke on the importantance of knowing where your children are. They evidently get a lot of calls from worried parents who think their child is missing and know that their child is at a friends, but don't know who, what, where or the phone number. Please have a plan set-up for this with your children for their safety and your peace of mind.
Discussion was also on the teen smoking law. If a teen is caught smoking, there is a fine that the parent has to pay. Please find out more about this law and how it would impact you or your teen. A lot of children follow peer pressure and smoke under age, this law was put into effect to help control this. Florida is serious about this anti-smoking For children under age law.
We also had speakers from the Community Policing Division and the AmeriCorps Program.
We thank everyone, including the children who participated in the Fire Rescue Presentation.
As you are well aware, Community Neighborhood Watch is not riding around and spying on people. We have discrete watchers in our communities and we also do a lot of Community Programs. Some of the upcoming programs are listed below.
